Edgar Martínez

Hall of Fame, class of 2019

Martínez was signed by the Mariners out of his native Puerto Rico before the 1983 season, and Seattle sent him to Bellingham to play that season with their Northwest League affiliate. Edgar’s bat woke up in 1984, when he was a member of the Midwest League’s Wausau Timbers. He spent the bulk of ‘85 with the Chattanooga Lookouts, but also posted a .935 OPS in 20 games at Triple-A with the Calgary Cannons. For whatever reason, Seattle sent him back to the Southern League for the entire ‘86 season, and then yo-yo’d him back to Calgary in 1987. He was called up to make his big league debut that September.

Minor league teams that Edgar Martínez played for, en route to the majors:

  • Bellingham Mariners (Northwest League)
