Frank Thomas

Hall of Fame, class of 2014

The White Sox drafted the Big Hurt out of Auburn with the seventh pick the 1989 draft and sent him to their Gulf Coast League affiliate. He tore the cover off the ball in seventeen GCL games, and Chicago promoted him mid-season to play for the Sarasota White Sox—their Florida State League affiliate based in the same city as the Rookie level team. Thomas started the 1990 season with the Birmingham Barons of the Double-A Southern League, but by August he was taking his hacks in old Comiskey Park.

Minor league teams that Frank Thomas played for en route to the majors:

  • GCL White Sox (Gulf Coast League)
  • Sarasota White Sox (Florida State League)
  • Birmingham Barons (Southern League)
