Mike Piazza

Hall of Fame, class of 2016

Vince Piazza asked his buddy Tommy Lasorda to draft his son, and Los Angeles obliged, taking young Mike in the 62nd round of the 1988 draft. After learning to catch, the Dodgers assigned him to Salem, Oregon for 1989 and to Vero Beach of the Florida State League in ’90. He learned to hit well in the California League in 1991, taking hacks with the Bakersfield Dodgers. His bat caught fire as a member of the ’92 San Antonio Missions club, and he earned a promotion to the Triple-A Albuquerque Dukes. By September of that year, Piazza has joined Lasorda in Los Angeles.
