The Dodgers signed Pedro out of the Dominican Republic when he was sixteen, and waited a couple years before assigning him to his first stateside minor league team, the Pioneer League’s Great Falls Dodgers in 1990. He began the ’91 season with the California League’s Bakersfield Dodgers, and was promoted mid-season to the Double-A San Antonio Missions. He dominated Texas League hitters and earned a late-season spot with the Pacific Coast League’s Albuquerque Dukes. He returned to the Dukes in 1992, and made his big-league debut as a September call-up. By ’93, he was entrenched in the National League.
