Montréal picked Raines out of high school in the 1977 draft, and assigned him to the Gulf Coast League for the summer. He played the entire ‘78 season in the Florida State League, tearing up the base paths for the West Palm Beach Expos. He spent 1979 with Double-A Memphis, and was called up to Montréal that September for a quick six games. In 1980, the Expos sent him to play for the Denver Bears in the Triple-A American Association. He was called up again for another September, but this time he stuck.
